have a set puffing rate the narrower bowl has higher air velocity
compared to the wider bowl. Air velocity affects the temperature of
the burn. Bowl depth, tobacco depth, affects the profile of the smoke
components. The tobacco acts like a fractionating column in that some
of the comonents come all the way through while others condense in the
tobacco below. As the tobacco burns down the condensed components are
again vaporized and in a higher amount than was available in the
origional tobacco. This would explaine why some people say the
tobacco strength builds towards the bottom. Try an experiment using
the same pipe and tobacco. Smoke a full bowl then smoke a half filled
bowl. You should be able to detect a difference in the flavor if you
pay attention.
