You pose a good question, Al, and make a good point. I can say, for
example, the GL Pease blends do not agree with me. Now, the Pease
Patrol is out there, and I do not want to get myself in trouble.
This is not a criticism of Pease blends or a personal attack of any
kind. Let's face it: many like the Pease blends just as, for
example, Pipestud likes Royal Yacht. It is interesting because I
have a problem with C&D blends too (where GL Pease is blended). I do
not truly know why.
Back to Pease: the flavour of Maltese Falcon is rather wonderful and
truly complex, but (like most of the Pease blends that I have
smoked), it gives me a headache. Many of the old Dunhill blends used
to give me a headache too--and I know it was the high level of
nicotine present in them. I wonder why Maltese Falcon would not dry
for me. Pease has said (and I believe him, of course) that he does
not use humectants (propylene glycol is one used mostly, I gather, as
a preservative and to retain moisture content). There is something
in those blends that is, well, unique.
I had a toothache one day. And I tried to think why. The only
difference in my routine was a bowl of Maltese Falcon. A repeat
experiment a couple of weeks later caused the same result (a
toothache from Maltese Falcon). Now, Pease blends are moist (and I
have smoked many of them when released rather than aged as, I gather,
they should be smoked). Does aging mellow them? There is no doubt
that the old Dunhill blends were high in nicotine (My Mixture 965
particularly practically put me in a catatonic state--no joke). I
know that I have issue with Virgina-based blends using bright
or 'young' weed (I enjoy Red Ribbon, though).
McCranie's Red Ribbon is a McClelland product, however, and the
company's blends (as a rule) are ideal for me. My 'every day' blend
is Royal Vintage Latakia #2. Although, I do not much care for the
Syrian McClelland blends and do not like Perique in my blends. Most
aromatics, I do not like. And, like you, that is mostly because of
the casing used (and the generally inferior weed). I can smoke Bob's
Chocolate, never-the-less, and I enjoy it. I have also found, that
(as a rule) I do not care for blends from Germany. They are harsh.
I just cannot smoke Kohlhase/Kopp blends (something is done in their
process of blending or aging or something that I cannot explain, but
I do not care for their blends).
In my experience, as I have said in a previous post, I know that high-
nicotine blends do not sit well with me and blends with obvious
humectants added do not sit well with me. I was at Barclay Rex in
New York not too long ago and they gave me a generous sample of one
of their house English blends. It looked good, smelled splendid, but
I could not smoke it. Researching its components, I found it
contained Perique. I can smoke Cavendish in a blend, though, and
that can be Virginia or Burley (Perique is usually a processed
Burley), but the curing process is what sets Cavendish apart.
Our individual palates are what set us apart. As someone is fond of
saying: smoke what you like, like what you smoke.
