you start drilling. For example, it would have been nice to know if it
is a curved stem. The stem can be straightened, drilled, and bent
again; but if you have never done that before, it is best not to start
on your Sav.
Second, is it a system pipe? If so, it could have an adapter to
take the place of that balsa sliver that Sav systems have. If not, the
sudden reduction from the balsa chamber to the narrow airhole can
cause a whistle.
Third, where does the whistle comes from? Does it occur at the bend
of the stem? That means there was a kink when the stem was originally
bent. I have never had that happen on a Sav, but I have had it happen
frequently on Caminettos (notorious whistlers, and not just from the
stems). To cure that also requires straightening and rebending the stem.
If the whistle occurs close to the button, then either the opening
in the button is fouled or the airhole is too small. Because this is a
Sav, which usually have very open airways, it would probably be gunk
in the button. If it is an inherited pipe, that would have been my
first guess, and a simple cleaning would have sufficed.
Savs do not usually have a whistling problem. I have three or four
dozen, ranging from Prince of Wales and Bent Bob cheapos to
Autographs, and I have never had one whistle that was not just dirty.
That is especially true of the older ones with rubber stems. The tars
gathered in the button over the years can be as dark and hard as the
bit that surrounds them, and it can be a long and tedious process to
clean them out well.
But you are right to like these pipes. I think they are a little
overpriced, and I personally prefer Brebbias; but I have never had a
Sav that did not smoke well. Early Savs were made under a half-dozen
names and sold as cheapos; and though their finishes weren't great,
they still smoke excellently. You can still get an Estella on ebay for
about $45, though you will have to wait for one that doesn't have a
half-dozen idiots determined to "shop victoriously." (I'm frightened
that those people are allowed to breed.) I have a bunch of Capris,
Romas, Punto Oros, and others that cost me less than $30, including
shipping. The Sav seconds and consignment pipes (such as Prince of
Wales and Bent Bobs) cost me about $10. And, of course, Frenchy always
has good, reasonable prices on these pipes. From the cheapos to the
Autos, they all smoke fine.
