Re: [Pipe smokers] Cracked bowl

Sounds like the start of a burnout.  Is there any discoloration on the outside of the bowl in the same area?  I'd suggest sending it to a repairman for a coating of pipe mud.

How bad is it?  If it is a start of a burnout, that means there is some wood already weakened and, perhaps, even charred.  That would make the area more likely to ignite and burn all the way through any time you smoke the pipe.

I have a favorite pipe that I think has some cracks inside the bowl.
Just to get a mental picture it is a bulldog shape, with a tapered bowl
inside and even more steeply tapered outside, making the bowl walls
very thin down at the bottom. It is fairly new and has been smoked less
than a hundred bowls. I noticed in bright light that there are what
looks to be tiny faint cracks down at the very bottom and one at the
vent opening. It has been taking time building a cake and there is not
much cake down at the very bottom so that is why I suspect it is the
wood itself. OK, hit me straight with the bad news, how bad is this?
