If there are fissures, but no charring, I would suggest that you make a mud of ash (cigar ash is good) a little honey, some carbon from reaming, and alcohol.  After an initial mixing, add ash or alcohol and remix until it is a little thicker than toothpaste.  Swab the suspicious areas with alcohol to remove residues, then with your finger, coat the area with the mud, pushing it firmly into the fissures.  Give it about a week to harden, then smoke it as before.  This should help promote caking over the areas of concern.

There is no discoloring outside. And I do not detect any charring, I
had another pipe that charred the bowl so I know what it looks like.
This pipe is still very new, it could simply be poorly dried wood (It
is a Peterson B-5, I am not sure if something like that can slip
through their QC).
