Harry, a vigorous, full cleaning, paying special attention to the mortise and draft hole in the bowl will help.  After that, if the flavor is not totally gone, repeat the cleaning and then stuff a cotton ball loosely into the bowl, nest it on some padding so it doesn't tilt over and which will alloy you to keep the end of the shank above the level of the bowl, then carefully add alcohol until the cotton is saturated.  If you spill any on the alcohol on the finish, wipe it off immediately and set it back in the nest.  Leave it overnight, remove the cotton, and let it dry at least 24 hours before smoking it again.

I have a pipe in which I foolishly tried some Captain
Black. Just one bowl and now the pipe reeks of Capt. Black.
I want to get that odor and taste out so I can enjoy that
pipe again. I contacted Scott at piperestore.com and I
know he has a great reputation, but my budget is a little
tight right now. Do any of our members out there know how
