Hi,
I just want to encourage you to keep working on giving up the cigarettes. I
did, and I was as addicted as anyone can be. I am glad every day that I quit
smoking cigarettes and you will be, too.
Ways to taper down:
-- roll your own from good tobacco. there really is some extra addictive
agent in commercially made cigarettes. you can tell when you start rolling
your own b/c you go through a small withdrawal no matter how much you smoke..
go to hand-rolleds, then cut down on the hand-rolleds. make sure to get the
best, purest, most chemical-free hand-rolling tobacco you can get.
-- use snuff to cut down further--I am talking about old-fashioned inhaled
snuff--get Freibourg and Treyer or Gawith Hoggarth--some of this stuff has a
huge amount of nicotine
--smoke the hell out of your pipes and smoke a good strong tobacco. But
don't inhale, ever. If you need to inhale, roll a cigarette. You don't want
to associate pipe smoking with inhaling/cigarettes in your mind.
Tapering down is a good, but at a certain point, tapering down becomes sheer
hell because you're just always at a permanent state of withdrawal. That's
the time to take a weekend, get all of the cigarettes out of the house, and
just quit.
I'm afraid I can't sugar-coat the unpleasantness of quitting. It is not fun..
It affects your sleep, your mood, your appetite, everything. Cigarettes are
a major drug addiction. I would not try to do the final quit any time you
are stressed or have major life events going on. I would do it over a
weekend or take vacation. Get ALL of your cigarettes out of the house. Don't
go places or do things that you especially associate with smoking
cigarettes. Expect three days that are pretty bad and several weeks that are
bad. You just have to be committed and get through it. After the first three
days, it gets better every day.
I smoke my pipe for pleasure now, and don't HAVE TO smoke it. I haven't
smoked a cigarette since 1994 and I don't miss them. I was a two pack-a-day
smoker. Like I said, if I could do it, you can. Best wishes for your
success.
