[Pipe smokers] More cake on top half of the bowl

Hi all. I have noticed on all my pipes that more cake forms on the top half of the bowl. I take every care to smoke all the way down and will let the pipe rest after it goes out. I will often relight what is left to make sure there is no tobacco left.
 
I was checking the cake useing a flashlight and discovered pieces of cake that look as if its fallen off the walls of the bowl. I did not see the pieces and assume it must have fallen out when i dumped the ash.
