[Pipe smokers] Time Travel

A couple of nights ago I found the website for Marine CAP Units.
Almost forty years ago I was at on from late September to late
January. I posted it to a site and here is the resulting tales about
cattle rustling and a dog. Pipe smoking occured during the telling.

Last night I foud the website of the Marine CAP Units.

Forty years ago next month we, E 5/46 4.2 mortars, went to CAP 1-3-3
for the following four or five months. I've been remembering lots of
the events that occured there. The cattle rustling by the Marines was
one.
Compared to the recent tales I had it very easy, only having a shot in
my general direction once in a while. We had a lot of good times with
the jarheads there and I think fondly of all the people I knew then.

Howard,

I'd like to hear the tale of the CAP Marines rustling cattle; maybe I
can fit it in my book about the 5th/46th. I've been in contact with a
number of the Marines on CAP's in our AO, principally down on the
Batangan near LZ Minuteman. BTW, in the next issue of the Americal
Journal there's a story about an ambush near CAP 133 where the
Marine's dog, "Bitch" walked right into the ambush site.

They were better Marines than cowboys. They had decided that they
would rustle a cow from Dong Lai 1, 1 on the map tho I thought it was
4, a mile or so northeast of the camp. The east end of the camp was
the high point called "50 bunker" because that is where the 50 cal was
when we arrived but had been moved. The Army guys would stand guard
there until midnight and the Marines till sunrise. That night it was
my turn to be there. We got the call that they were out there so we
wouldn't shoot them. The tree line was around a half mile north and
that appeared to be the path of their return. I'm not sure if we
could hear them returning but I know we did hear a Braaaaaw and the
sound of hoofbeats. They returned empty lassoed.

I have a picture of Bitch and Chootz, who I think was one of her pups.
Chootz had the misfortune of locating a mine. I can't remember if
Bitch was still there when we left in January but it's going on forty
years and lots happened there.

Howard,
We will be publishing a story from Dennis Hugues (B/5/46) about an LP
he was on just south of CAP 133 where they thought VC were approaching
and threw grenades. The noise kept up until all of a sudden, Bitch the
dog was standing there licking Dennis (unhurt). It is a great story in
the 3rd Qtr 08 issue of the Americal Journal which will come out in a
few weeks. I'd love to see a picture of Bitch. Could you send an
e-mail attachment to me? (dwtaylor@ohio.net).

Currently our entire life is in boxes in the basement until we get the
house finished. The picture is somewhere in that pile. She was a
light yellow tan dog about the size of a bigger Boston Terrier much
like you see in the pictures of the slums of the world in the ads on TV.

Howard M. Davis

Too bad she couldn't talk because I bet whe would have had lots of
stories to tell. I'm amazed that after forty years and all that has
happened we are sharing stories about an ordinary, or not, small dog
in a small and obscure corner of the world. It is the ordinary
everyday miracles that give the fabric of history such a rich texture.
