That's an excellent suggestion, Jeff. A new (estate) pipe breaks in very good with a straight Virginia, and that is one of the best.
I also like to select a Balkan for a new (estate) pipe just in case there are any ghosts from what the PO may have smoked. Their flavor is more full and can mask many ghosts - but nothing can mask #79. They produce a nice soft ash for me so I can spread ash over the bowl (a technique called 'ashing'), and help promote a cake. If I do detect a ghost with a Virginia like the Red Ribbon, I will switch the next smoke to a Balkan, and after smoking the bowl, let the dottle stay in the bowl to 'season' the bottom of the bowl, which helps mask the ghost better on the next bowl.
