Re: [Pipe smokers] MacBaren Golden Blend for breaking in pipes

Well, that is an issue, but more with the pipe than with the choice of tobacco :-)

My best solution for that is to select another brand to break in.

You make a good point Joe, my only problem is that its such a waste smoking your
favourite blend and not enjoying it. Especially when breaking in a Pete, you
could go through most of a tin of your favourite blend and not enjoy a single
bowl

I think there are several approaches to choosing a tobacco for breaking in a
pipe.  One is to choose a blend that may offer a quicker caking.  Another is
to choose a blend that will burn dry, which increases the chance of burning to
the bottom more easily.  Another is to choose a blend with a lighter flavor
so you may be able to detect burning briar, should it happen.  I prefer to
smoke a blend I like.  That way, while you're charring the briar, you are
also seasoning the bowl with the blend you may want to continue to smoke in the
pipe.  The breakin period is already enough of a challenge without adding a
tobacco you will not like to the process.

I have been smoking this blend from time to time, about a pouch a year. The
other day i was going through my tobaccos and discovered this and thought it
would be a great blend to break in new pipes. The burly is around and the taste
is not really overpowering. On the flip side, it does burn as hot as hell and
could ruin a pipe. Bear in mind that i am assuming the pipe will be used for
Virginia and/or VaPer blends once break in is completed

I would like to know what you guys think of this
